Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi has described data centers and data analytics services as interesting innovations that can be developed by domestic business players to develop the digital ecosystem.

"In Indonesia, data consumption has reached 2 megawatt (MW) per capita per year; in Japan, it has reached 20 MW per capita per year...This opportunity must be used to contribute to the regional and global data center markets," he said here on Thursday.

While discussing the growth of global data consumption in further detail, Setiadi cited 2023 data from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which estimated that data consumption will rise threefold in the period from 2022 to 2027.

In 2022, global data consumption reached 3.4 million PB (petabyte) and by 2027, it is projected to reach 9.7 million PB.

To support the growth of the data center industry as a business in the digital sector, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics is making efforts to increase the number of digital talents who can seize opportunities in the ongoing digital transformation.

The minister also noted that the urgent need of meeting the need for digital talents is also related to the growth of new jobs emerging in the industry, one of which is that of data protection officer (DPO).

Under the Law on Personal Data Protection, every company that processes data is required to have DPOs.

He said that the current DPO work still uses a lot of services from abroad and the certification cost is quite high at an estimated US$3,500 per person.

According to him, the cost will be quite large if Indonesia continues to depend on foreign countries.

To this end, he said he hopes that later, the certification for DPO can be fulfilled by Indonesian digital talents so that the economic contribution of the new profession can have a greater impact on the country.
