Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom, urged the public to be cautious about offers of illegal work abroad that could involve them in international crime syndicates, such as drugs.

"If interested in working abroad, please follow the legal procedures to avoid being caught up in international crime syndicates," he emphasized during a press conference on Friday.

He said the Foreign Affairs Ministry's data indicated that more than 100 Indonesians were serving sentences abroad for involvement in drug crimes.

He then pointed out that 11 Indonesians were involved as drug couriers abroad.

Hukom expressed regret while harboring hope that Indonesian citizens involved in crimes abroad could immediately return to Indonesia and serve their sentences at home.

"Their poor families are waiting at home, including their children and wives," he stated.

The statement was made in connection with BNN's success in arresting heroin smugglers from Southeast Asia. According to Hukom, the smuggling was controlled by an international network.

"One of the perpetrators is an Indonesian citizen in the Golden Triangle. He controls it and recruits Indonesian citizens to become international couriers," Hukom revealed.

The Golden Triangle is an area used as the center of production of various types of narcotics in Southeast Asia and is located in the mountains in the northern part of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos.

"I remind the public to not be carried away by offers from these international syndicates," he remarked.

Earlier, the agency was able to thwart the circulation of 2.76 kilograms of heroin, 9.83 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, and 114.23 kilograms of marijuana, with eight suspects arrested.

The evidence of heroin and crystal methamphetamine came from an international network, while the marijuana came from Aceh and was being shipped to Java.
