On the sidelines of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane, Laos, on Wednesday, Marsudi said that cross-border organized crime has become a concern for almost all ASEAN member states, including Indonesia.
"Concerns about transnational organized crime, including online scamming and online gambling, are a concern for almost all countries," she noted while issuing a press briefing.
"This concern was conveyed in the context of Myanmar. So, unstable Myanmar has caused many activities related to cross-border crimes," she added.
The Foreign Minister further said that cooperation between ASEAN countries needs to be strengthened to tackle a number of emerging crimes, such as human trafficking, online gambling, and online scamming.
Indonesia has also established bilateral cooperation with Cambodia, Myanmar, and the Philippines to handle cross-border crimes, especially those related to technology.
According to Marsudi, bilateral cooperation with local state authorities is needed for the handling of cases or evacuation of Indonesian citizens, many of whom are falling victim to the crimes.
In addition to bilateral cooperation, ASEAN leaders agreed to a declaration during Indonesia's chairmanship of the grouping in 2023.
The declaration emphasized cooperation in handling cross-border crimes considering that the victims not only come from Indonesia but also from other ASEAN member countries.
"When Indonesia became chairman, there was a declaration. A declaration of cooperation in handling cross-border crimes related to technology. It includes the problem of online scamming and also online gambling," she highlighted.
"So, we are trying to handle this problem, both bilaterally and through the ASEAN mechanism," Marsudi added.
