Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of National Development Planning Suharso Monoarfa pointed out on Thursday the positive correlation between high fish consumption and the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of a country.

He noted that China, Japan, and Norway rank among the countries with high fish production and are also listed among the top 25 nations for the highest fish consumption per capita.

According to World Bank data from 2021, China’s GDP per capita was recorded at US$17,658, Japan’s at US$41,259, and Norway’s at US$65,916.

Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shows that in the same year, the annual per capita fish consumption in China, Japan, and Norway averaged 39.89 kilograms, 45.12 kg, and 50.16 kg, respectively.

Although Indonesia is not categorized as a developed country like the three mentioned, its fish consumption is significantly high, considering it is an archipelagic nation with abundant fishery resources, Monoarfa said.

FAO data indicates that Indonesia's total fish consumption reached 44.4 kg annually per capita in 2021, making it the 17th highest in the world.

"The level of fish consumption in Indonesia is high, covering 70 percent of total animal protein consumption," Monoarfa stated.

Despite having large fishery resources and high consumption of fishery products, it is regrettable that the fisheries sector contributes only 3 percent to the national GDP, he added.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has stated that it is continuing to optimize the country’s fisheries potential through blue economy policies.

The blue economy policy includes five key directions: expanding marine conservation areas, implementing quota-based or regulated fishing, developing sustainable aquaculture, supervising and controlling coastal areas and small islands, and cleaning up plastic waste in the sea.
