Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya declared Mamberamo the 57th national park of Indonesia and called it the last bastion of biodiversity defense.

Nurbaya remarked that in the past decade, the ministry has consistently carried out various programs and activities, innovations, collaborations, issuance of basic policies, and operations as well as conducted policy transformation in strengthening and optimizing the management of conservation areas.

She also expressed gratitude and appreciation to all parties for their support and hard work that went into declaring Mamberamo a national park.

"I catch the hope of the regents, indigenous peoples, and village communities, who have provided recommendations in writing and verbally during the integrated team study on changes in the function of the Mamberamo Foja Wildlife Reserve," Siti stated during the declaration event in East Kalimantan on Tuesday (Oct 15).

She further explained the revision of the Law on Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Ecosystems, which stated the government's commitment to bolstering the three pillars of conservation, intensifying biodiversity conservation through preservation areas, strengthening law enforcement and criminal sanctions, as well as increasing funding and community participation in conservation efforts.

On the same occasion, Regent of Mamberamo Raya Yimin Weya noted that the Mamberamo National Park— earlier a wildlife reserve—was an area with a high level of biodiversity, home to the bird of paradise and various fish that must be preserved.

He also requested that the management of Mamberamo National Park be carried out with the community by applying the local wisdom that has existed there for generations.

"The existence of Mamberamo National Park is expected to help the community in improving their standard of living, both economically and also the capacity of human resources around the national park, for example, capacity in the fields of forestry, conservation, and tourism," he noted.

Covering a total area of 1.7 million hectares, Mamberamo National Park is located in 12 administrative districts in Papua Province, Central Papua Province, and Mountains Papua Province.

The national park earlier had the status of Mamberamo Foja Wildlife Reserve.
