Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as chair of the National Economic Council in the Red and White Cabinet for the 2024-2029 period at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday.

The inauguration of the National Economic Council chair was carried out according to Presidential Decree Number 139/P of 2024 on the Appointment of the Chair of the National Economic Council issued on October 20, 2024.

"President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, effective from the time of his inauguration, appoints Military General (ret.) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan as chair of the National Economic Council," Deputy for Administration and Apparatus of the Ministry of State Secretary Nanik Purwanti remarked.

Before being appointed as the council's chair, Luhut had served as coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment in the Onward Indonesia Cabinet since 2019.

He also earlier served as coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs from 2015 to 2016, replacing Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno.

During his office term as coordinating minister for maritime affairs and investment, Luhut played a strategic role in the fields of maritime affairs and environment, as well as toll road infrastructure, high-speed rail, and the development of the electric vehicle battery industry.

He also played an important role in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia and is known as a figure who often provided various recommendations to the Joko Widodo-Ma'ruf Amin government in responding to sensitive issues.
