During a welcome ceremony at his office in Jakarta on Monday, the newly inducted minister highlighted that President Prabowo is among the few heads of state who have formed a ministry dedicated to addressing human rights issues.
Most countries tend to integrate a human rights body with another state institution, he pointed out.
According to Pigai, the establishment of the Human Rights Ministry also indicates that the new president is determined to drive the state to play an active role in the protection of the human rights of its citizens.
Through the ministry, the government will work to ensure the fulfillment of people's basic rights to food, clothing, and settlement, he said.
"The Ministry of Human Rights will work beyond merely devising and supervising policies, as it will participate in advancing (human rights)," he emphasized.
Pigai pledged that his office will also strive to fulfill people's economic, social, and cultural rights while helping maintain a stable social and political environment.
Human Rights Deputy Minister Mugiyanto Sipin conveyed a similar sentiment, saying that the formation of the Human Rights Ministry is a testament to President Prabowo's genuine concern for human rights.
"The establishment of the Human Rights Ministry as a separate ministry points to his commitment (to human rights)," he added.
The Human Rights Ministry is among the new ministries formed by President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Their Red and White Cabinet comprises 48 ministries in total.
The ministry previously functioned as a directorate general within the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
