Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment/ Head of Environmental Control Agency ​​​Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has said that he will evaluate the policy on stopping waste imports for recycling raw materials.

In addition to reviewing the policy, the ministry will focus on the better management of final disposal sites (TPA), especially at the regional level.

"We are also evaluating the waste imports, it seems we have to end them immediately, and carry out strategic steps here," Hanif said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to the National Waste Management Information System data, Indonesia recorded 38.2 million tons of waste in 2023, and 38.21 percent of it was unmanaged.

Hanif assured that he will study the issue of regional disposal sites to accelerate waste control efforts as it is one of the factors for realizing environmental quality.

He will also focus on incorporating green economy principles in environmental policies, including to reduce waste that ends up at landfills, as part of efforts to protect the environment.

During President Prabowo Subianto's term, the Indonesian government will prioritize environmental preservation for future generations as well as to ensure sustainable development.

"Moving forward, the government is targeting the achievement of sustainable development targets, accelerating the achievement of net zero emission target, as well as reducing carbon footprints and water footprints for various products and utilizing bioplastic technology in everyday life," Hanif informed.

Therefore, he said, one of the focuses of his 100 first days as Minister of Environment will be the completion of the Environmental Protection and Management Plan for 2025–2055.

The document will provide benchmarks for implementing the strategic agenda of the environment and national development.
