Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN), on Thursday, conducted mass destruction of 86.3 kilograms of methamphetamine and other narcotics and raw materials from nine drug abuse cases exposed throughout October this year.
"Joint operations that involved police officers, soldiers, customs officials, and others have resulted in the declaration of 29 people as suspected perpetrators," BNN Head Police Commissioner General Marthinus Hukom remarked during the demolition in Jakarta on Thursday.
He then furnished details about the items seized, mentioning around 2.4 kilograms of heroin, 970,864 paracetamol, caffeine, carisoprodol (PCC) pills, 2.3 kilograms of cocaine, 1.4 tons of paracetamol, 309.3 kilograms of sodium starch glycolate, 426 kilograms of caffeine, and nearly 78 thousand milliliters of chemical fluid, among others.
The BNN chief then revealed that most of the destroyed items were found in a clandestine narcotics lab raided in a villa in Bali Province. Filipino nationals were involved as the lab's operators.
He also alluded to the case involving members of a family in Serang, Banten, who distributed narcotics in the form of PCC pills.
Hukom emphasized that the demolition of items reflects BNN's commitment to protecting the state and the nation by cracking down on drug trafficking.
"Members of the public need to play an active role (in drug abuse eradication) by reporting (cases) to authorities. Such an endeavor does not mean that we hate drug addicts but instead serves as a form of love," he emphasized.
Furthermore, Hukom highlighted that destruction of the items, mandated by Article 91, paragraph 2 of Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics, must be carried out by the BNN within a week of a district attorney issuing a related declaration.
He then stated that Article 90, paragraph 1 of the law allows the authority to retain small samples of the seized items for lab testing and evidence.
