Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Immigration and Penitentiary Affairs, Silmy Karim, urged swift action to improve Indonesia's correctional system during his visit to the Penitentiary Affairs Directorate General in Jakarta on October 22.

In a statement received on Saturday, Karim emphasized that enhancing the correctional system may require measures such as granting amnesty and clemency, building more correctional facilities, and implementing other technical improvements.

“I would like to request the cooperation of all here to advance our correctional system,” he told officials at the directorate general.

Karim also stressed the importance of identifying the best and most practical solutions to address challenges and gaps in the correctional system's implementation.

On the same occasion, Acting Director General of Penitentiary Affairs, Ambeg Paramarta, noted that his office has been working to develop effective approaches for expediting amnesty and clemency processes and accelerating the construction of new correctional facilities.

He added that the directorate general will soon draft a blueprint for implementing the Correctional System Law.

Secretary of the directorate general, Supriyanto, highlighted the urgent need to address staffing shortages in the prison system, noting that each warden currently oversees 42 inmates.

To address this, he mentioned that his office is preparing a report to provide a more accurate count of the prison population.

During the meeting, directors at the Corrections Directorate General also presented their programs and achievements, ensuring alignment between the goals of the newly established Ministry of Immigration and Penitentiary Affairs and ongoing initiatives.
