"Along with the Public Works (PU) Ministry, future development is always oriented towards efforts to improve the safety and quality of life of the community," he noted in Kalibaru, Jakarta, on Monday.
He remarked that Jakarta's northern coastal residents face constant tidal flood threats. Land subsidence occurs at all times, with land in some places experiencing annual land sinking of 10 centimeters.
"If we do not do anything, this will be dangerous. We are trying to save human lives," the minister remarked.
AHY explained that while working to prevent further land subsidence caused by decades-long groundwater extraction, the government continues to ensure reliable water access for residents.
"Therefore, the Jatiluhur Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM) should be able to provide clean water supply of approximately 3,200 liters per second," he noted.
In addition, his side ensures that the Karian SPAM in Banten starts operating immediately to increase the water supply to reduce groundwater extraction.
Moreover, the government is building embankments to protect the community.
"The existing Kalibaru embankment is 4.8 meters from the water surface. It can protect the community from tidal flooding. However, we are adding a retention pond polder system as well," AHY elaborated.
He clarified that this enhancement would collect rainwater, with pumping mechanisms activated at specific water levels to prevent community flooding.
"These efforts are also in line with improvement in the sewage system. We do not want garbage and waste in the community. Therefore, sanitation must also be improved at all times to improve the quality of life as expected by President Prabowo Subianto," he noted.
He affirmed that the government is planning further efforts for the development to save the community.
"In the future, we should think about other areas, such as the north coast of Java Island, which also experienced similar challenges. The future infrastructure development should save our people," he emphasized.
