"Starting from 2025, we will bring the emission reduction targets to the sub-national level, promoting a more integrated approach to climate actions in all provinces and regional governments," he expounded at a discussion, which was followed online from Jakarta on Friday.
At the discussion held on the sidelines of the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan on Friday, he said that Indonesia has resolved to encourage collective steps from regional governments to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as mandated by the Paris Agreement.
Rohmatullah underlined that by encouraging local stakeholders to take concrete actions against carbon emissions, Indonesia can move closer to achieving its national climate targets.
The official then spotlighted his office's projection that Indonesia will achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier by implementing policies supportive of the green transition, in tandem with promoting low-carbon development.
Furthermore, he highlighted Indonesia's commitment to adopting a balanced approach in pursuing climate change and economic goals, as reflected in the country's more ambitious climate targets put forward in its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document.
The second NDC document, which will be submitted to the UNFCCC next year, will drive Indonesia to expand the coverage of its emission reduction initiative to the fisheries sector and upstream oil and gas sub-sector.
"Indonesia's second NDC will be implemented throughout the 2030–2035 period as a strategy that aligns with the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN)," he informed.
