"We have a clear roadmap to achieve zero emissions by 2060, which involves replacing 800 coal-fired power plants with gas-fired power plants and implementing a biomass program," PLN's director of Project Management and Renewable Energy, Wiluyo Kusdwiharto, remarked in Jakarta, Thursday.
During the Plenary Session of the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 in Jakarta, Wiluyo stated that in order to realize this ambitious goal, Indonesia requires substantial investment to the tune of approximately US$700 billion to develop 423 gigawatts (GW) of New Renewable Energy (EBT).
PLN has already taken significant strides towards decarbonization, including canceling 13.3 gigawatts of PLTU projects planned in the 2019-2028 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) and 1.2 gigawatts of PLTU projects for which a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) had been signed.
Additionally, 1.1 gigawatts of PLTU have been replaced with renewable energy.
At the 2024 ISF Forum, Wiluyo also announced the implementation of the De-Dieselization Program aimed at transitioning diesel power plants (PLTD) to cleaner power sources by creating hybrid PLTDs across Indonesia.
"We have approximately five thousand diesel power plants throughout Indonesia, and we are replacing them or creating hybrids with renewable energy sources like solar PV plus batteries," he said.
"Through this program, we have reduced total cumulative emissions by around 3.7 million tons of CO2," he added.
The 2024 ISF Forum, held on September 5-6, served as a platform for the Indonesian Government to gather world leaders from various sectors and countries to discuss climate change and exchange ideas, knowledge, and best practices.
The two-day event featured a variety of sessions, including keynote speeches, plenary sessions, thematic discussions, high-level dialogues, signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs), exhibitions, and a gala dinner.
