Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's National Library, or Perpustakaan Nasional (Perpusnas), has managed to conduct preservation measures on 19,726 ancient scripts found across the country.

In a webinar observed from Jakarta, Perpusnas Deputy for Development of Library Materials and Information Services, Mariana Ginting, emphasized that the preservation is a testament to Perpusnas' responsibility and commitment to serving the nation by keeping Indonesian literary heritages from vanishing.

"Preserving ancient scripts is not a mere effort to protect documents, as such endeavor is also a measure to maintain the traces of history, knowledge, and civilization that forms our nation," she remarked during the webinar held to promote Perpusnas' preservation feat on Tuesday.

Ginting pointed out that throughout this year, her side has taken measures to maintain the condition of ancient texts in 12 provinces.

"We are very proud of our contribution to the preservation of ancient scripts that are rife with priceless historical, cultural, and literary values," she highlighted.

However, she noted that the number of successfully preserved old texts is still far below the total of 82,158 such scripts registered in the national library's grand design for the preservation of Indonesian old writings.

"Preserving ancient scripts is not an easy task," she highlighted.

On that note, the official emphasized the need for institutions and members of the public to participate in the preservation mission to ensure the sustainability of the country's ancient texts, treasuring them as part of the cultural heritage of the Indonesian nation.

In view of that, she explained that in addition to showcasing Perpusnas' achievement in the preservation of the texts, today's webinar was also organized with the aim of inspiring and encouraging institutions and stakeholders to play an active role in safeguarding Indonesian ancient scripts.
