Speaking at a seminar on redesigning Indonesia's electoral system here on Tuesday, he noted that President Prabowo Subianto's directive on election reform, especially on mitigating the potential conflicts that can cause polarization, is in line with the community's needs.
He emphasized that the election is not only an arena of competition, but also an important opportunity for strengthening national unity. The government has also opened space for civil society and experts to provide inputs.
Sugiarto also highlighted the importance of transparency in discussing the revisions of the General Election Law and the Regional Heads Election Law, which are national priorities.
Regarding the 2024 Regional Head Elections, he underlined the need for thorough evaluation, especially related to the implementation of elections on the national and local scale.
Accurate data and analysis are deemed necessary to determine the best steps going forward.
"We will collect data from governments, the data will be linked to what happened in all the regions," he said.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of mitigating conflicts in vulnerable regions.
The government is also continuing to take preventive measures to ensure that every democratic process runs peacefully and democratically, reflecting the spirit of unity, which is the foundation of the nation.
"We have identified; there are red, yellow, and green zones," he said.
Indonesians will vote to elect mayors, district heads, and governors of regions on November 27, 2024. The vote tabulation process will be carried out until mid-December.
The elected governors and deputy governors will be sworn in on February 7, 2025, while the inauguration of elected mayors, vice mayors, district heads, and deputy district heads will be carried out on February 10.
