"We advocate, disseminate (information on gender equality), and provide technical guidance to people from various elements of society in a bid to actualize gender equality," Eni Widyanti, assistant deputy for women's rights protection in households at the ministry, stated when contacted from here on Friday.
She made the statement in connection with Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar's report about different political preferences among wives and husbands leading to 500 divorces in a province in Indonesia.
In this regard, Widiyanti highlighted that such a difference would not have ended in a divorce if the husband were to have fully understood that his wife equally wields the right to determine her political stand, which should be respected.
"Considering the relatively strong patriarchal culture in our society, there is a possibility of the divorce count further increasing, ultimately affecting the growth of children negatively," she pointed out.
The official noted that addressing such an issue requires various parties and stakeholders to work synergistically to ensure equal decision-making authority among women and men.
"Of course, we cannot work alone. Collaboration among all parties is essential in this cause (gender equality)," she remarked.
Furthermore, Widiyanti emphasized that the PPPA Ministry would continue to guide and assist Indonesian women in making more contributions in political settings, encouraging them to hold notable positions like a lawmaker, regional head, or leader of a political party.
"If that is not yet viable, at least women should grow more prudent in electing leaders who are committed to building gender equality and empowering women," she stated.
