Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said that the decision is based on Presidential Decree Number 33 of 2024 concerning Election Day, which was signed by President Prabowo Subianto on November 21.
"We convey an official announcement regarding the presidential decree, which sets the voting day as a national holiday," he declared at a press conference after a ministerial meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture's office on Friday.
A total of 545 regions will hold simultaneous elections on November 27, consisting of 37 provinces, 415 districts, and 93 cities, he added.
With the national holiday declared, the ministry hopes the public can easily participate in the election without being constrained by work activities. The decision is also expected to support the smooth implementation of the election.
Earlier, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto underlined the importance of preparing disaster mitigation to make the regional elections a success.
Disaster mitigation is intended for areas categorized as disaster-prone, he said. Such efforts are needed to anticipate a disaster on election day so that voting can resume smoothly.
Furthermore, he informed that his party has listed several indicators to measure the social, political, and natural disaster vulnerability of each region.
"There are 27 indicators used by the Ministry of Home Affairs to measure the level of vulnerability of regional elections," Sugiarto said.
He also listed several important aspects that need to be considered to ensure the successful holding of the 2024 regional election, including proper distribution of regional election logistics and outreach to maximize the participation of the elderly, disabled, and marginalized voters.
