"The chief of West Sumatra Police has informed me about the incident, and I have requested an investigation into the motive. However, it's clear that I have ordered a thorough investigation into the case," Prabowo said in Jakarta on Friday.
He instructed the West Sumatra Police to take strict legal and ethical action against the perpetrator.
"If the motive is later revealed to be something that has always been considered harmful to the institution, I urge everyone, regardless of rank, to take decisive action. Don't hesitate," he said.
He emphasized that the incident cannot be described as internal conflict.
The National Police Headquarters has deployed the National Police Professional and Security Division (Propam) to assist in the investigation.
Earlier, around 00:43 a.m. on Friday, South Solok Police operations head, Adjunct Commissioner (AKP) Dadang Iskandar, reportedly fatally shot the head of the criminal investigation unit, AKP Ryanto Ulil Anshar.
An autopsy revealed that Anshar was shot twice, once in the temple and once in the cheek, with the latter shot penetrating the nape of his neck. Police suspect that he was shot at close range.
Chief of the West Sumatra Police Inspector General Suharyono said his team is actively investigating the shooting incident.
He also urged the public to be patient, saying he cannot provide complete information about the incident at the current time.
The two-star general assured that he will take decisive action, including ordering the dishonorable discharge of the police officer involved.
"We will process this case this week or at least within the next seven days. I have reported it to the police chief," he said.
The case has drawn the attention of the House of Representatives, with the head of Commission III, Habiburokhman, urging the National Police to conduct a thorough investigation.
The Gerindra Party politician said the shooting may be tied to Iskandar's alleged involvement in illegal mining.
"It's questionable whether the perpetrator was supporting illegal mining, and whether they became angry when the illegal mining activities were investigated. This matter must be thoroughly investigated," Habiburokhman said at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Friday.
