Jakarta (ANTARA) - The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) has established the Nationality and Sustainable Development Caucus (KKPB) to integrate local policies made by district heads, mayors, and governors with the national vision.

MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani informed that the formation of the KKPB one day before the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) is the right measure to promote the importance of sustainable development.

"Only with active citizens' participation can democracy get its substance, not just about the procedures," he said at the parliament complex here on Tuesday.

He added that appropriate strategies need to be prepared to encourage prospective Pilkada winners to carry out development programs that are in line with the national vision.

According to Muzani, regional and national interests can be fused into comprehensive strategies.

He said that several things need to be done to align regional interests with the national vision, such as upholding the principal values of the country.

"The national values are fixed, by making the values of Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI), and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika the shared perspective of every regional head to make decisions," he said.

In addition, he encouraged the central and regional governments as well as the House of Representatives (DPR) Legislation Body to harmonize policies.

Thus, it is necessary to form the KKPB, he added. "That way, the progress of (policy) implementation in regions can be measured from time to time," he explained.

Further, he said that Pilkada functions as a mechanism for choosing regional leaders who understand local interests and needs.
