Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie emphasized the importance of the efficient use of information and communication technology (ICT), including artificial intelligence (AI), in the learning process.

"Of course, what we want to promote is the use of digital tools, including AI, that truly enhance efficiency and self-development for everyone, especially in the field of education," she said on Women's Innovation Demo Day in South Jakarta on Tuesday.

She also noted that the use of ICT, including AI, in the learning process, whether by students, lecturers, or administrative staff, must serve two functions, namely improving efficiency and developing self-capacity.

Giving an example, she said that she regularly uses Google Scholar to find the latest reference sources and ask academic research questions, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), which help increase her efficiency and build her capacity as a scientist and academic.

She then urged all parties to be critical of the advancements in ICT and not apply them to educational activities straight away.

"This is certainly something we need to ask ourselves: when we use ICT, for example, AI, does it really improve efficiency or does it actually reduce efficiency? If there is too much to upload, too much administration in AI, that's an important question," she said.

Christie added that her office will issue a circular letter advising higher education institutions on the efficient use of information and communication technology, including AI, in the learning process in higher education.
