This was conveyed by the ministry's Deputy for Women's Rights Protection, Ratna Susianawati, at the "Women on the Frontlines of the Climate Crisis: The Urgency of Gender-Based Policies" event in Jakarta on Friday.
She underlined that women must have a role in climate action, which is currently a priority issue for several countries. This is deemed important, considering that the impact of climate change vastly affects the lives of women and children.
"Meaningful participation is very important, where the elaboration includes women's roles, (a situation where) their voices are heard, they can participate directly," she remarked.
Susianawati also highlighted gender equality, which provides equal access and participation for all.
"When we talk about gender equality, we must see to what extent is the accessibility for men, women, older adults, children, and people with disabilities. If accessibility has been given, how big is the participation?" she remarked.
She emphasized that if accessibility and participation are established, then the next aspect to consider is evaluating the extent of control each group possesses, particularly within decision-making frameworks.
The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection also coordinates with the Ministry of Environment, which leads efforts to address the climate crisis.
"We are assisting to ensure that from the start of planning, budgeting, implementation, evaluation, and monitoring of climate change activities, we provide opportunities for women to participate in making climate change policies," she remarked.
