This was conveyed by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar during his speech at the National Teacher's Day summit in Jakarta on Friday.
"The government is committed to ensuring that teachers have the same rights as other education professionals," he noted in a statement issued on Saturday.
Umar stated that his ministry is striving to improve the ability and competence of teachers to address the evolving challenges in education.
He lauded the dedication and struggle of teachers in building the character and quality of Indonesian human resources.
Teachers play a crucial role in shaping a generation capable of meeting contemporary challenges, he added.
"Teachers are not only educators but also mentors who instill noble values in students," Umar said.
With empowerment, he added, teachers can adapt to technological advancements and global demands, fostering a generation that contributes to Indonesia's progress.
Metaphorically comparing educators to radiant torches, he emphasized their role in dispelling intellectual darkness.
"They are not teachers if they are not able to bring light into the minds of students," Umar pointed out. "A teacher must teach with love."
On the same occasion, the ministry's Director General of Islamic Education, Abu Rochmad, stated that this year's National Teacher's Day celebration featured various activities as a mark of appreciation for all teachers across Indonesia.
"The National Teachers' Day shows the commitment of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in recognizing teachers across Indonesia," he said.
