"The early warning continues until December 15," BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati stated at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) here on Tuesday.
"Before December 15, rainfall will increase gradually, and the peak will be around December 15, with rainfall reaching 100 mm per day. This needs to be watched out for," she revealed.
The BMKG earlier issued an early warning for potential extreme weather on December 7-8, 2024. The warning then continued until December 15, given that rainfall in Jabodetabek was still high.
Karnawati stated that weather modification carried out by BMKG, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the Jakarta Provincial Government had reduced rainfall on land by at least 30 percent.
She explained that the recent extreme weather occurrence stemmed from three distinct meteorological conditions, with the first being the presence of cyclone seed 91S, which was detected in the Indian Ocean southwest of Lampung and was gradually moving away from the Indonesian territory.
The second contributing factor is the approaching peak of the rainy season, which is further intensified by the diminishing La Nina effect, creating conditions conducive to unusual weather patterns. Additionally, the Median-Julian Oscillation (MJO), characterized by a cloud cluster originating from the western Indian Ocean of Indonesia, serves as a significant catalyst for the extreme weather conditions experienced in the Jabodetabek region.
"Hence, the combination is like that. The BMKG, along with BNPB, will continue to try to overcome it with weather modification," Karnawati remarked.
She appealed to the public not to harbor concerns about weather modification, as this effort would not cause inundation in other areas.
"What is actually modified are the clouds that are still in the sea and have not yet transitioned over land," she explained.
The public is urged to continue monitoring the development of dynamic weather information through various channels, especially the BMKG website application, including social media.
"This development needs to always be monitored for our collective safety," she stressed.
