BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar emphasized in Jakarta on Tuesday that Christmas is an important religious celebration in Indonesia, so the agency is ensuring its safety and continuity by monitoring food products circulating during that period.
"The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency is also in a position to work to further secure and ensure the success of the events we call Christmas and New Year," he said.
Ikrar cited one example of collaboration between BPOM's intelligence unit and online marketplaces to improve food security. This collaboration has led to the discovery of around 240 thousand links to illegal products that made exaggerated claims.
Regarding marketing monitoring, Ikrar said his side would coordinate with other parties, and the BPOM would supervise if there were any extraordinary events, such as food poisoning from gift packages or hampers.
Ikrar also reminded the public to do "Cek KLIK" to ensure the safety of the food they consume during the year-end celebrations. Cek KLIK stands for Check Packaging, Check Label, Check Distribution Permit, and Check Expiry Date.
The BPOM initiated this social movement to raise public awareness of the importance of selecting safe products.
