Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka presided over a disaster preparedness roll call and national meeting organized by the Disaster Response Unit of the National Alms Agency (Baznas) in Semarang, Central Java, on Friday.
"I would like to thank Baznas for its role and contribution to the collection and distribution of Islamic philanthropic funds to those in need. The funds have also been mobilized for disaster handling and prevention," he said.
He lauded the agency and its volunteers and partners for playing an active role in disaster mitigation and for working in synergy to support the measures taken by the government before, during, and after natural disasters.
"I hope that going forward, Baznas will further strengthen its role in community-oriented disaster mitigation measures by providing people with training on disaster preparedness or building an emergency school," he said.
He also encouraged the alms institution to provide scholarships and school necessities to disaster-affected children and economically support displaced disaster victims.

Meanwhile, Baznas head Noor Achmad informed that the disaster preparedness roll call and national meeting drew participation from around five thousand Baznas disaster mitigation volunteers from 360 districts and cities of 30 provinces across Indonesia.
According to him, the five thousand participants are only a small part of the total number of active disaster mitigation volunteers of the agency.
"Today's activities are the result of the community's demands. The people, particularly Muslims, have urged us to facilitate them to donate funds for disaster mitigation purposes," he added.
For that reason, Baznas has decided to dispatch volunteers to help collect people's charitable funds for disaster mitigation, he added.
During the roll call and national meeting, the agency also carried out an earthquake simulation that demonstrated the volunteers' capability in handling a disaster and evacuating victims.
