Head of the ministry's Center for Curriculum and Learning, Yogi Anggraena, explained that disaster education not only develops understanding, knowledge, and skills regarding disaster risk management and climate change but also health promotion and pandemics.
"Disaster education develops preparedness to support students' resilience in facing and adapting to major and sudden changes," he said at the "Staying Alert to Face Megathrust at Educational Units" talk show in Jakarta on Friday.
He further said that with disaster education, students and teachers can recognize the signs of natural disasters and thereby, minimize material losses and fatalities.
"Well, if the mitigation has been prepared through education, when seeing signs of an earthquake, instead of going into the classroom, instead of gathering in a room, the teacher will look for an open space," he added.
According to Anggraena, in introducing disaster education, his ministry is encouraging teachers to use local knowledge about disaster mitigation from their respective regions.
Meanwhile, regarding the learning materials in the disaster preparedness curriculum, the ministry has designed the curriculum to cover three things, namely pre-disaster stage, emergency handling, and post-disaster recovery.
To strengthen students' knowledge of disasters, the curriculum also encourages teachers to disseminate information and educate students about disaster mitigation through dioramas, communication media, and outdoor class activities, he said.
