Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, the ministry's head of the public relations bureau, said that AI was not entirely reliable for executing defense missions.
"We do not want to be reckless. We will study it to adjust it to our needs," he said on Thursday.
Inkiriwang noted that AI-powered weapon systems face significant limitations, particularly in terms of achieving accurate target acquisition. Precision is especially critical, as hitting the intended target can determine mission success or failure.
"In several conflict areas where AI has been used, precision has not been entirely accurate. In some cases, it targeted civilians by mistake," he pointed out.
However, he admitted that the use of AI in the weaponry industry is increasing. Inkiriwang assured that AI development would continue to enhance TNI's weaponry.
"AI has become something unavoidable in the defense context," Inkiriwang remarked.
Earlier, the TNI ranks planned to develop AI in the defense sector. The Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) is one of the parties interested in deepening AI technology.
"The latest technological equipment supporting cyber and AI is still incomplete. This technology is expected to be implemented in 2025 following the 2024 evaluation," Air Commodore Ardi Syahri, TNI-AU's head of information service, stated.
He noted that his side has developed AI technology to secure the airspace in 2024.
However, this development is deemed suboptimal due to funding constraints for procuring defense technology.
Syahri remarked that AI development for defense began this year, including its use in operations during the 2024 Angkasa Yudha Joint Exercises.
He emphasized that TNI-AU would continue focusing on AI development to support the mission of defending Indonesian territory.
