According to him, the failure of the Indonesian national team to advance to the semifinals should be a valuable lesson for coach Shin Tae-yong in handling the under 22-year-old team.
"I wanted us to win against Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines. If only we had given our best and lost at the semifinal, it is alright but we have fought to give our best," he remarked in a statement from his office on Sunday.
Thohir said with the coach and players' quality, Indonesia should be able to at least qualify for the semifinals.
"Therefore, we will conduct an evaluation," he pointed out.
The team coached by Shin Tae-yong failed to qualify for the semifinals after losing to the Philippines, 0-1 in the fourth match of the Group B preliminary round at the Manahan Stadium, Solo, Central Java, on Saturday.
The Philippines' only goal was scored by Kristensen from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute.
Thohir conveyed that the composition of the Indonesian football team competing at the ASEAN Cup is set to compete in the 2025 SEA Games as well.
According to him, the failure to reach the ASEAN Cup semifinals round is an important note considering that in the SEA Games, competition from Southeast Asian countries will probably show the same strength as in this competition.
"This national team is projected to go to the 2025 SEA Games. Since we have failed to reach the semifinals round, the condition will be similar to the SEA Games later. We must fix many things. We still have one year for evaluation," he concluded.
