"Our primary objectives are to empower and protect all Indonesian migrants working abroad," PPMI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding said in Sigi, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday.
Therefore, the PPMI Ministry is determined to improve existing regulations, collect and manage comprehensive data on Indonesian migrant workers, and combat brokers offering overseas jobs via illegal channels, he said.
Karding also called for active participation from migrant workers and urged them to opt for lawful channels to find work abroad and obtain the skills needed by the countries of destination.
"Do not depart without possessing any skill and the ability to understand the language of the country of destination. It is also important to prudently manage your finances so that you can send money to your families at home," he told migrant workers.
The minister then suggested that migrant workers return to their hometowns to establish a business and create jobs after finishing their work contracts.
"Hopefully, migrant workers will be able to bring about progress to their regions of origin," he said.
Addressing the Sigi district government, Karding emphasized the need to set up a work training center for local migrant workers.
"Such a facility is expected to help residents who are about to work abroad to hone their skills," he said.
The minister delivered his remarks in Langaleso village, one of the five residential areas he has declared as productive migrant villages. The other villages are Sibowi, Pesaku, Kaleke, and Baluase.
