Kuta, Bali (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment is planning to close 306 final disposal sites (TPA) that use the open dumping system, which hurts the environment.

"We are no longer allowed to dump waste in TPA, but to address this issue from the upstream," Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said while participating in a beach clean-up activity at Kuta Beach, Bali, on Saturday.

One such open dumping landfill is located in Suwung Denpasar, Bali, which is targeted to be closed in 2026.

It is planned to be closed due to the improper management of its 32.46-hectare disposal site, which is still operating in an open land basin without being covered or lined with soil.

The final disposal site in Suwung Denpasar is currently filled with garbage reaching an estimated height of around 35 meters above sea level.

This is prohibited by Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management.

Article 44 of the law states that regional governments must close open dumping landfills within a maximum of five years from the law's enactment in 2008, that is, by 2013.

To address this issue, Nurofiq has been communicating with the Bali provincial government to prepare better waste management, which can turn waste into electrical energy, using environmentally friendly technology.

"This system is currently being built," the minister said.

Out of the total 550 landfills in Indonesia, 306 or around 54.44 percent still use the open dumping system.

Referring to the Global Waste Management Outlook 2024, around 38 percent of global waste that is not managed properly contributes to the climate change crisis, loss of biodiversity, and waste generation.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the total waste in 2023 reached 56.63 million tons, with only 39 percent managed properly.

"So, there is still 60 percent of waste that is not managed properly throughout Indonesia," Nurofiq noted.
