"The Ministry of Environment has issued a Circular Letter on the Waste Aware Lifestyle Movement," the ministry’s Director of Waste Management Novrizal Tahar stated here on Wednesday.
He explained that in the ministry’s Circular Letter No. 02 of 2024 regarding the Waste Aware Lifestyle Movement, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq appealed to governors, district heads, and mayors to conduct extensive and systematic campaigns and education programs on the Waste Aware Lifestyle Movement.
"(Adopting) a waste-aware lifestyle is expected to become a fundamental characteristic of all Indonesians in managing waste," he explained.
Local governments are encouraged to conduct campaigns and educational initiatives and disseminate information on efforts to prevent waste generation, such as by not using disposable products and packaging.
In addition, the Environment Ministry urged local governments to spread informative education so that people opt for products without packaging and bring their own bags while shopping.
Local governments are expected to continue to inform residents about the importance of waste sorting at home, which is an important step that everyone can take.
Implementing waste sorting can contribute to the process of producing raw materials generated from recycled waste and reduce the volume of waste that goes to the final landfill.
The ministry also urged the local governments to promote the movement to utilize leftovers to reduce organic waste, considering that 50-60 percent of waste in Indonesia is categorized as biodegradable, such as leftover food.
