"The protected area of Nusantara city, part of the seven planning areas, is located in Simpang Samboja, which is currently being developed," OIKN chief Basuki Hadimuljono said in a statement released on Saturday.
The development of the protected area, according to him, is part of reforestation efforts covering 1,800 hectares of area.
The BOSF has so far succeeded in reforesting land in Samboja Lestari, which used to be a reed field.
Therefore, the OIKN is confident of its collaboration with BOSF for developing Nusantara as a forest city—an ongoing process that is targeted to be completed in 20 years.
The protected area will be the forerunner of Nusantara, Hadimuljono said.
"Along with BOSF, we are carrying out collaboration on reforestation and animal release, as part of the construction process of Nusantara," he informed.
According to BOSF director Aldrianto Priadjati, the foundation has designated Samboja Lestari as a part of the city jungle, or a protected area with a strategic function in Nusantara.
The development of the protected area is aimed at maintaining the ecosystem in Indonesia's new capital.
"Along with the Ministry of Forestry, we have succeeded in rehabilitating land in Samboja Lestari from reed fields to secondary forests rich in biodiversity," he informed.
The rehabilitation of Samboja Lestari area, which is home to 113 orangutans and 76 sun bears, is part of the BOSF's commitment to supporting the development of Nusantara as a forest city.
The concept of a forest city would allow Nusantara to not only carry out ecological functions but also serve as a habitat for wildlife species that are endemic to the island of Kalimantan.
It would also encourage all stakeholders to work together to support the development of a sustainable and environmentally friendly Indonesian capital.
