"The victim was snatched by a crocodile," said I Made Oka Astawa, head of the Pangkalpinang Search and Rescue Agency.
He explained that the deceased, identified as Chaca, was attacked while bathing in an abandoned tin ore mining pond.
Chaca's body was found floating at around 5:20 a.m. local time, not far from where she was reportedly taken on Saturday. Her body was evacuated and handed over to her family for burial.
The search mission involved a joint team of rescuers from the local SAR agency, the army, the police, and community members. Following the recovery of Chaca's body, the mission was concluded.
Crocodile attacks have occurred in various parts of Indonesia. In February 2019, a fisherman lost an arm in a crocodile attack on the Seranggas River in Central Kalimantan.
On April 8, 2020, a saltwater crocodile attacked and killed a six-year-old boy swimming near a beach in Buru, Maluku. Local marine police later shot the four-meter-long crocodile using an SS1 V5 rifle.
