In a statement made in Jakarta, Wednesday, Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Management of KLH/BPLH Ary Sudjianto stated that so far, the availability of 2.48 million tons of CO2e for global trade marks a significant advancement for Indonesia.
"We are optimistic that together, we are able to implement and face the challenges of international carbon trading in order to achieve the NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) target while gaining economic benefits," Sudjianto remarked.
The deputy highlighted that Indonesia is ready to initiate international carbon trading as part of its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the launch scheduled for January 20, 2025.
The large carbon trading potential in Indonesia is reflected in the trade value reaching Rp55.237 billion since the carbon exchange began operations in September 2023, with a trading volume reaching 1.040 million tons of CO2e.
With this robust domestic carbon trading capacity, Indonesia is now poised to enter the international market, supported by IDXCarbon, a carbon trading platform developed by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), as the backbone of international carbon transactions.

However, Sudjianto highlighted that achieving success in this venture requires a solid foundation in the form of fair regulations, a transparent monitoring system, and a collective commitment from all parties.
He noted that Indonesia has established a strong legal basis through Presidential Regulation Number 98 of 2021, which governs the implementation of carbon economic value, supported by infrastructure transparency in the form of the PPI National Registry System (SRN).
The initiation of carbon trading is critical for meeting the national climate targets outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document.
Based on the Enhanced NDC, Indonesia aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 31.89 percent through domestic efforts and 43.20 percent with international support by 2030.
"We must all continue to synergize and collaborate to reduce GHG emissions and increase climate resilience for the welfare of the Indonesian people," Sudjianto affirmed.
