He emphasized that the government regulation under Law Number 1 of 2024 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) will focus on protecting children in the digital environment and will require electronic system providers to include clear and strict age restrictions for social media users.
“Currently, Commission I is not specifically working on a particular regulation for social media restrictions. Instead, we are waiting for the government to issue the government regulation as a derivative of the ITE Law,” Heryawan remarked here on Thursday.
The House's deputy chairman stated that the new government regulation could establish a reliable verification process and an effective monitoring system, which is crucial, given the significant impact of social media on children.
He noted that the regulation issued by the government would specifically refer to Article 16A of the ITE Law, which mandates that electronic system providers ensure the protection of children.
Heryawan also voiced his endorsement of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs’ initiatives aimed at restricting social media due to its detrimental impacts.
Heryawan drew attention to the adverse effects of social media that could jeopardize national resilience, family stability, and the morals of younger individuals.
Currently, President Prabowo Subianto and Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid are discussing strategies to safeguard children in digital spaces.
Hafid stated that her side would draft the government regulation while concurrently considering stronger measures to enhance child protection in digital environments.
"We have thoroughly studied it, but while we are working on more solid rules, the government will issue the regulation first," she remarked on January 13.
