"We all know that there are positive and negative impacts of social media; there are already many complaints about the use of AI (artificial intelligence) that has a negative impact," he noted here on Wednesday.
Patria affirmed that his ministry is currently collecting inputs from various parties. The proposed age restriction for the use of social media is still under review.
He appealed to parents and families to be more active in supervising children using social media at home.
He expressed the hope that parents and families will monitor their children's activities on social media, including access to potentially harmful content, to protect them from negative impacts that can affect their education and lives.
The deputy minister underlined that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is coordinating with the relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, to study the plan.
He further said that President Prabowo Subianto is supporting the initiative.
The President is paying great attention to the protection of a healthy digital space for children, especially to support their education, he expounded.
"Mr. Prabowo gives a positive signal for it because he is very concerned about the use of digital space by children," he said.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, said that the DPR will examine the government's plan to limit the use of social media among children.
The DPR has heard about the idea of limiting social media use and has discussed it, Ahmad informed here on Tuesday. However, the plan will require further discussion by the DPR, he added.
He said that the DPR will study the positive and negative impacts of the plan as well as the benefits of limiting the use of social media. This is because several other countries have taken the step of limiting the use of social media based on age.
