Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, has said that the DPR will examine the government's plan to limit the use of social media among children.

The DPR has heard about the idea of limiting social media use and has discussed it, Ahmad informed here on Tuesday. However, the plan will require further discussion by the DPR, he added.

He said that the DPR will study the good and bad impacts of the plan as well as the benefits of limiting the use of social media. This is because several other countries have taken the step of limiting the use of social media based on age.

Meanwhile, deputy chairperson of Commission I of the DPR, Dave Laksono, said that there must be support from the government to protect the nation's children from the negative impacts of social media use.

According to him, social media has a significant negative impact on children, especially those who are underage. He said that children's abilities are not sufficiently developed to understand and be selective about content on social media.

"We should not (allow) our children to grow based on the ideas or content that does not fit their age and can potentially damage their mindset and have a negative impact on their morals," he added.

Currently, President Prabowo Subianto and Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid are discussing the government's strategy to protect children in the digital space.

Hafid on Monday hinted at the possibility of a draft government regulation being prepared first while a stronger regulation to protect children in the digital space is being studied.

"The government will issue a government regulation first," she affirmed.
