"Terrorism remains a global threat that has an impact on the security situation and impedes development, including in Africa," Nasir remarked at the UN Security Council (UNSC) open debate on countering terrorism in Africa in New York on Tuesday (January 21) local time.
According to his ministry's statement, Nasir stated that Indonesia, as a country that has experienced terrorist attacks, comprehends the need for a comprehensive approach to prevent terrorism.
He emphasized that measures in accordance with the principles of effective implementation of government authority and a soft approach consistent with the UN Charter and international laws should be prioritized in combating terrorism.
He also highlighted that Indonesia's experience also shows the importance of addressing the root causes of terrorism and violent extremism.
The deputy minister explained that Indonesia always prioritizes dialogue, tolerance, and values of moderation, as well as encouraging digital literacy and critical thinking skills to protect society from harmful ideologies, such as terrorism.
"National policies must also include efforts to address the financing aspects of terrorism and violent extremism," he remarked.
He further emphasized the need for a regional mechanism to counter terrorism and highlighted Indonesia's commitment to supporting several initiatives regarding this issue in African Union countries.
Nasir stated that Indonesia has so far continued to provide support to African countries through training and capacity-building programs within the Jakarta Center for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) framework to counter terrorism and transnational crimes.
He also highlighted the importance of exchanging information and best practices at the global level as key to countering terrorism among law enforcers between countries.
Apart from reaffirming Indonesia's support, he encouraged the international community to continue to support Africa in creating solutions to address security challenges, including terrorism and transnational crime.
The deputy minister expressed hope for the effective execution of the African Union's Agenda 2063 to support the continent's transformation into a capable global power in the future.
Furthermore, he encouraged reform of the UNSC to ensure fair representation for Africa on the global stage.
