Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is seeking to accelerate the development of nuclear power plants in Indonesia to 2029 from the initial target of 2032.

"The development of nuclear power plants is being accelerated to 2029–2032," Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot Tanjung informed here on Thursday.

The development of nuclear power plants is part of the government's efforts to support the energy transition, he added.

Based on the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN) 2025–2060, the national power plant capacity is projected to reach 443 gigawatts (GW) by 2060, with 79 percent of the capacity derived from new and renewable energy.

"To meet the energy mix target, we see the need for acceleration of the construction of nuclear power plants," Tanjung pointed out.

However, the ministry has not yet determined the companies it will partner with to develop the nuclear power plants.

Currently, he said, the development of the nuclear power plants is still being studied by the government.

Before developing them, the government will need to establish the Nuclear Energy Program Implementation Organization (NEPIO).

The organization will play an important role in monitoring the development of nuclear power plants, according to the ministry's director general of new, renewable energy, and energy conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi.

Currently, the draft of a presidential decree on the establishment of NEPIO is being discussed at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

She said she expects the NEPIO to be established soon.

Earlier, the government planned to build a 250-megawatt on-grid nuclear power plant facility in 2032, in line with the target set in the draft revision of the government regulation on the National Energy Policy (KEN), which has been agreed upon.

The target requires developing human resources and choosing a clearing technology scheme, such as small modular reactors (SMR), high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGR), or thorium.

To support the plan, the National Energy Council mapped out 29 prospective sites for nuclear power plant development, based on safe criteria for construction.
