Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Ministry of Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) has urged the Malaysian government to investigate a shooting incident involving officers of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) and five Indonesian migrant workers.

The incident resulted in one fatality and left others injured.

"The ministry urges the Malaysian government to immediately investigate this incident and take firm action against the APMM patrol officers if they are proven to have used excessive force," said Christina Aryani, Deputy Minister of P2MI, during a press conference in Jakarta on Sunday.

The shooting by APMM officers occurred on Friday, January 24, at 3:00 a.m. Malaysian time, targeting five undocumented Indonesian migrant workers.

The incident claimed the life of one worker, critically injured another, and left three others receiving treatment at various hospitals in Selangor, Malaysia.

The ministry is committed to ensuring that the injured victims receive proper medical treatment, Aryani stated.

Additionally, the ministry will provide assistance to the victims’ families, including legal support and the repatriation of the deceased's body.

“Currently, the Ministry of P2MI is working to identify the victims’ regions of origin to deliver assistance effectively,” she affirmed.

The ministry has coordinated with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the police attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to secure consular access for visiting the victims in the hospitals.

Aryani further stated that her ministry will seek a meeting with the Malaysian government to discuss preventive measures to ensure similar incidents do not recur in the future.

The meeting will also address the handling mechanisms for undocumented Indonesian migrant workers, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights.

During Sunday's press conference, Aryani stressed that the government remains committed to protecting, supporting, and ensuring the human rights of Indonesian migrant workers are upheld.
