The coffin, which belongs to Basri, the only Indonesian killed in the APMM interception that turned fatal in the Tanjung Rhu waters in Malaysia's Selangor on January 24, 2025, safely arrived at Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport at 4 p.m. local time.
Basri's cousin, Azrai, told reporters that the family has accepted Basri's fate, adding that he will be buried in his hometown.
"We will immediately transport him to Rupat Sub-district in Bengkalis District. We will bury him today," he remarked.
Azrai stated that the family learned of Basri's shooting in Malaysia on the same day he was killed. At that time, the family was unaware of Basri's employment in Malaysia.
"We did not know anything about where he sought employment, and we were not communicating with him at all," Azrai added.
A group of Indonesian migrants was shot by APMM officers while allegedly attempting to leave Malaysia illegally in the early morning of January 24, resulting in one fatality and injuries to four others.
Confirming the incident, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry's director of protection of Indonesian citizens and legal entities, Judha Nugraha, stated that the victims were likely shot after resisting arrest by APMM officers when their boat was intercepted in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor.
The four injured Indonesians have been treated at a hospital in Malaysia. They are currently in stable condition, according to the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
The embassy has also secured consular access to visit them on Wednesday (Jan 29).
Responding to the incident, Foreign Minister Sugiono on Monday (Jan 27) called for a thorough investigation, including the possibility of "excessive use of force."
On the same day, Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Minister Abdul Kadir Karding also demanded transparency from the Malaysian side on its probe into the fatal incident.
