Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia, requesting a thorough investigation into the recent shooting of Indonesian migrant workers by Malaysian authorities, spokesperson of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), Philips Vermonte, confirmed on Friday.

The diplomatic note was sent through the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, he said.

"Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono has also requested a thorough investigation. We are waiting for the investigation by the Malaysian authorities," the spokesperson added.

In response to a proposal from the House of Representatives (DPR) for Indonesia to form its own investigation team, he said that the measure will still depend on the progress of the probe carried out by the Malaysian authorities.

Earlier, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian government, pushing for an investigation into the shooting incident, including the possibility of excessive use of force against the migrant workers.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur are continuing to monitor the condition of four migrant workers who are still receiving medical treatment in Malaysia.

The embassy also obtained consular access to meet the victims on Wednesday.

President Prabowo Subianto has said he believes that Malaysia will conduct a proper investigation into the shooting of five migrant workers by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) officers in Selangor.

"We are certain that Malaysia will carry out the best investigation," he said here on Thursday.

According to Prabowo, the issue was discussed during his meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

The APMM opened fire on a boat carrying Indonesian migrant workers in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on January 24, 2025. The incident claimed the life of one worker and left four others injured.
