Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Youth and Sports is prioritizing an equitable presence of multi-purpose sports centers in all regions across Indonesia to support sport competitions and trainings for athletes of various sports, including basketball.

"Currently, we are intensifying the efforts so that regions no longer propose stadiums or mini stadiums; we are prioritizing building multi-purpose sports centers," Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo said.

Speaking at the inauguration and working meeting of the Indonesian Basketball Association (Perbasi) here on Saturday, he explained that the multi-purpose sports centers can be used for several sport events, including basketball, volleyball, and futsal.

Each of the sports centers are expected to have a capacity of 3,000 to 6,000 people with air conditioning system, installed in their buildings.

"We want them (multi-purpose sports centers) to be available in many regions," he said.

Ariotedjo explained that the presence of multi-purpose sports centers in regions will support sport competitions and trainings for athletes, including basketball players.

"Thus, the Indonesian Basketball League can be more evenly distributed throughout Indonesia," he remarked.

The minister further said that the adequate availability of sports center facilities is an important aspect to boost the development of sports ecosystems that will have an economic impact on communities in all regions.

On that occasion, he also noted that his ministry and other ministries are seeking to increase the utilization of sports facilities previously used as venues for the country's quadrennial multi-sport event --- the National Sports Week (PON).

Saturday's event was attended by several top officials, including Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas and Chair of the Indonesian National Olympics Committee Raja Sapta Oktohari.
