Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Industry provided assistance to the small and medium industry (IKM) of tempeh chips in Sukabumi, West Java, through a guidance, certification, and equipment restructuring program, facilitating its first export to Saudi Arabia.

"We appreciate CV Kahla Global Persada, which has shared a success story of IKM to penetrate the international market. Hopefully, this achievement can provide sustainable benefits," the ministry's director general of small, medium, and multifarious industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita, noted in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Yanita, tempeh chips played an important role in community empowerment within Indonesia.

She further noted that to be more globally competitive, IKM businesses should continue to improve product quality, build brand value, adopt new technologies, and stay informed about market trends both domestically and internationally.

Furthermore, the ministry's director of IKM for food, furniture, and building materials, Bayu Fajar Nugroho, reported that tempeh exports in 2023 reached 720.68 tons, valued at US$2.43 million.

Nugroho indicated that this figure represents a 35.47 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) increase compared to 2022, when 533.8 tons were exported, with a value of US$1.64 million.

He noted that the Ministry of Industry has been supporting the IKMs exporter for tempeh, providing guidance, mentoring, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification in 2021.

In addition, machinery and equipment restructuring was carried out in 2020, with a discount assistance value of Rp11,475,000 (US$682).

With the various coaching received, Nugroho affirmed that CV Kahla Global Persada currently employs 15 people, with a monthly production capacity of 31 thousand packages, with potential export markets in Canada, Norway, Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Switzerland, and South Korea.
