Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Uzbekistan have emphasized the importance of state visits by their leaders, according to a joint statement issued by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and his Uzbek counterpart, Bakhtiyor Saidov, on Wednesday.

"The two ministers highlighted the significance of high-level visits between the leaders of both countries," the statement noted, following the Second Meeting of the Indonesia-Uzbekistan Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) on February 10–11.

In the statement, Sugiono and Saidov called for strengthening bilateral relations through mechanisms such as the joint commission, the bilateral consultative committee, and regular meetings between senior officials of both nations.

The ministers acknowledged that Indonesia and Uzbekistan have held multiple high-level consultations, including the 8th Bilateral Consultative Committee Meeting in 2020.

They also underscored the importance of the recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of the Bilateral Consultative Committee, signed in September 2024, as a foundation for further advancing diplomatic ties.

Additionally, the ministers noted the growing frequency of meetings between government officials from the two countries in recent years.

For example, former Indonesian President Joko Widodo met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of COP-28 in Dubai in 2023.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Ma’ruf Amin visited Uzbekistan in 2023, and the foreign ministers of both countries held meetings in Doha in 2020 and in New York in September 2024.

Sugiono and Saidov also agreed on enhancing consular, economic, social, and cultural cooperation, as well as addressing regional and international issues, as stated in their joint declaration.

Saidov arrived in Jakarta on Monday and met with several officials, including Sugiono and Trade Minister Budi Santoso, during his visit.
