Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has the potential to be one of the leaders among emerging economies in adopting artificial intelligence (AI).

This was conveyed by Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid at the opening of the Congress of the Indonesian Women Journalists Forum (FJPI), which was held online on Saturday.

On that occasion, Hafid noted that European countries, especially France, aim to become leaders in the field of AI amid the competition between the US and China, which are seeking to lead AI at the global level.

"AI should not be something dictated by big countries; it must also take into account emerging economies like Indonesia and other countries in the Global South," she said.

Hafid highlighted the need to consider the needs of developing countries when creating global AI governance policies.

She added that developing countries should be able to contribute to global AI development, just as developed countries do. To this end, an approach that upholds equality between nations is necessary.

She said that Indonesia hopes the Global South will not only be viewed as a market but also recognized as a group of countries capable of producing innovators in the field of AI.

The minister also expressed hope that the 2025 FJPI Congress will educate and prepare women journalists to adapt to the rapid development of AI, thereby improving the quality and accessibility of information.

Earlier, she highlighted the Indonesian government's dedication to building inclusive AI development governance at the Ministerial Meeting of GPAI Members and Interested Countries of the AI Action Summit in Paris on February 9.

According to Hafid, Indonesia is advocating for AI policies based on equity, inclusivity, and security, as well as the utilization of AI to support sustainable development.
