Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Adies Kadir, dismissed claims that the proposed Bill on the Indonesian Military (RUU TNI) would reinstate the TNI's dual function.

"No, the dual function of the Indonesian armed forces would not be brought back. We will monitor this together," Kadir remarked after leading Tuesday's House Plenary Meeting at the Parliament Complex.

He explained that currently, TNI members do not typically hold government positions but only fill roles that are specifically needed.

"Yes, some have taken positions, but very few, right? Those are just what the ministries need, right? Very few TNI members hold civilian positions, but many who do are actually retired police officers," he remarked.

However, Kadir urged the public to remain patient as discussions on the RUU TNI proceed, with one option being removing the rule preventing TNI members from engaging in business activities.

On the other hand, Kadir stated that an essential point in the bill focuses on changes to the retirement age of TNI members.

He also elaborated that the inclusion of the RUU TNI in the 2025 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas), which was approved at the House Plenary Meeting, was based on a new presidential letter (Surpres) that differs from that of the previous administration.

"This Surpres was submitted during Mr. Joko Widodo's time before the end of his term. This (new) Surpres replaces the previous one because the ministries' names (currently) are different, so a new Surpres was submitted," he explained.

The government representatives involved in the RUU TNI discussion will include the minister of law, the coordinating minister for political and security affairs, the minister of defense, and the TNI commander.
