Beijing, China (ANTARA) - Indonesia has a strong diplomatic foundation to mitigate any global challenges posed by tensions between China and the United States, according to former foreign minister Hassan Wirajuda.

"Although China-US relations are tense, our relations with either China or the United States remain firm. As long as the foundation is strong, it will survive any political dynamics," he told ANTARA here on Wednesday.

The trade war between China and the US is at the center of ongoing tensions. It dates back to 2018 when the US slapped high tariffs on Chinese products and restricted Chinese-made technology in the country.

Wirajuda highlighted that Indonesia and China have enjoyed a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2013 in strategic issues of bilateral importance, such as integrated industrial area development, marine and fisheries, and space exploration for peaceful purposes.

The comprehensive strategic partnership shows that China "recognizes Indonesia as its equal peer" he said noting, China does not establish such a partnership with countries it considers less important.

Likewise, Indonesia and the United States have forged a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2023 in defense, economy, and clean energy transition aspects, the former minister highlighted.

"Those are our foundations. The strength of our bilateral relations does not hinge on the emotional level, but instead on the firm foundation," he said about the comprehensive strategic partnership.

The former FM further described Indonesia's "free and active" foreign policy principle as an essential asset to ensure the country's survival in global diplomacy, especially amid ongoing China-US tensions.

"I believe that free and active politics does not mean we are neutral. It instead reflects our position to always heed to our national interests," he said.

The principle helped Indonesia maintain its global stature and contribution during the Cold War era (1948–1990), he added.

According to the Investment Ministry/Investment Coordinating Board data, China's investments in Indonesia reached US$8.1 billion in 2024. Meanwhile, their bilateral trade value stood at US$135.17 billion, according to Statistics Indonesia.
