Jakarta (ANTARA) - Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti emphasized the significance of preserving regional languages as it is not only a constitutional requirement but also integral to the nation's identity.

"To commemorate International Mother Language Day, we fully support activities and programs carried out by the Language Development Agency," he noted in a written statement here on Friday.

The minister made these remarks while officially opening the series of events of the 2025 International Mother Language Day commemoration in Sofifi, North Maluku, on Thursday.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education envisions quality education for all, with one of the priority programs being the development and advancement of the Indonesian language, literature, and various cultures of the country.

"The advantages that we have as an Indonesian nation are having rich mother languages while also having a unifying Indonesian language," Mu'ti affirmed.

Hence, he expressed hope that all stakeholders would foster a collective commitment and awareness to advance the Indonesian language while continuing to preserve regional languages.

On the same occasion, Head of the ministry's Language Development Agency, Hafidz Muksin, remarked that the commemoration of International Mother Language Day is a manifestation of UNESCO's commitment to continuing to preserve world civilization, especially regional languages.
