"Multilateralism continues to erode, while the countries that built this system are increasingly reluctant to maintain it. If this trend continues, the global system is at risk of failure," he told the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday, according to a statement from his office.
He also highlighted the failure of the League of Nations nearly 80 years ago due to weak enforcement of international law, the inability to prevent aggression by major powers, and a lack of commitment among member states.
"If this situation is allowed to persist, we risk experiencing a similar failure," he cautioned.
Multilateralism should not be mere rhetoric but must be translated into concrete action, Nasir stressed. He added that international law must be enforced consistently and without discrimination.
"If international law is applied only when it benefits certain parties, its credibility will be further weakened," he explained.
Therefore, Indonesia has emphasized that the G20 must play a more active role in supporting multilateral reforms based on the principles of inclusiveness, equality, solidarity, and partnership.
Indonesia is also encouraging the G20 to coordinate with other multilateral institutions, such as the United Nations and the multilateral trading system, to work more harmoniously and reinforce each other.
Additionally, Indonesia has backed the implementation of the UN Future Pact as a concrete step toward strengthening global governance and has emphasized the importance of the upcoming Financing for Development Conference as a key opportunity to push for substantial reforms.
"We must move forward to advance the reform of the multilateral system and create a better world for all," Nasir stated.
At the G20 FMM, which was opened by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday, the majority of G20 member countries raised concerns about global conflict and instability, including developments in Ukraine and Gaza.
Overall, G20 nations underscored the importance of international law in maintaining world peace and stability, addressing rising global poverty, and mitigating the impact of geopolitical dynamics on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
